🩸 ProteinHow to remove baby poop & diaper blowout stains
Protein + fat + yellow pigment · cold water, enzymes, sunlight
Baby poop stains are a mix of protein, fat and yellow pigment. When a diaper leaks, it can stain onesies, sleepsuits and even bedding yellow, but rinsing with cold water first and soaking in enzyme detergent removes most of it. Any yellow that remains often fades a lot when dried in the sun.
🔬 Why this order works
Protein cooks and sets into the fibers when it meets hot water, and the yellow pigment (bilirubin) dyes the fibers and lingers. So rinse out the solids and protein with cold water first, break down the remaining protein with enzyme detergent, and treat the pigment with oxygen bleach or sunlight.
🧺 Step by step
Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.
👕 By fabric
Enzyme detergent → oxygen bleach soak → drying in the sun removes almost all of it. After using bleach, add an extra rinse.
Soak in enzyme detergent and wash, then remove any remaining yellow with a color-safe oxygen bleach. Sunlight also fades clothing colors, so keep it brief.
Don't use enzyme detergent on wool or silk baby clothes. Blot and rinse with cold water, treat with a neutral wool detergent, and if it remains, take it to a dry cleaner.
🚫 Don't
- Rinsing straight away with hot water — the protein cooks and sets in.
- Chlorine bleach — baby clothes don't need it, and if not fully rinsed out it can leave irritants.
- Putting it in the dryer while a stain remains.
⏳ If it has already dried
For stains that have already set yellow, soak overnight in water with enzyme detergent and then wash; any remaining yellow often fades a lot if dried in the sun while wet, several times over.
💡 Tip
If a diaper leaks while you're out, put the clothes in a plastic bag with a little cold water so they stay wet. If it doesn't dry on, it comes out much more easily.
❓ Common questions
Can I wash poop-stained clothes with other laundry?
Once you've disposed of the solids and pre-treated with a cold-water rinse, it's fine to wash them with other baby laundry.
The stain color changed after we started solids.
When food pigments like carrot or squash mix in, the stains turn orange. The order is the same, and any remaining color is treated with oxygen bleach and sunlight.
What about cloth diapers?
Dispose of the solids, rinse in cold water, and collect them until wash day. Many people skip fabric softener, as it can reduce absorbency.

General home methods. For valuable garments or unknown fabrics, take them to a dry cleaner and say what the stain is. Follow product labels for bleaches and solvents, ventilate, and never mix them.
